A lot of the time, you’ll have specific uses in mind before you decide you’d like to extend your home (such as expanding your kitchen or adding a downstairs bathroom), but if you’ve decided that you’d simply like to add more room generally then it’s a good idea to pin down exactly what this space will be for.
Planning permission can be a bit of a minefield – for a lot of extensions you will need to apply to your local council for planning permission, and there are a number of building features which will likely be restricted. There are too many rules to list in one small section of an article (stay tuned for something comprehensive in the future!) so for now, we’d recommend taking a look at the government’s official Planning Portal website here.
Remember that there are different planning rules for single-story and two-story extensions, and you typically cannot have an extension occupying more than 50% of the available land space at the rear of your property – if in doubt, speak to your local council’s planning department or ask our experienced contractors and planners for advice and help.
